Setting boundaries is difficult for most of the leaders we’ve worked with. They tend to develop a habit of negative self-talk when it comes to saying no when necessary. However, as a leader it’s crucial to establish boundaries that can safeguard your team from excessive workload and enable their growth.
Saying no and setting boundaries both enhance your leadership – not diminish it.
It takes courage to set boundaries as it requires making tough decisions that may not always be popular or well-received by others. Yet boundaries are essential for maintaining order, structure, and productivity in any organization and setting clear expectations helps keep everyone on track.
Saying “no” requires strength, resolve, and the courage to value your own needs and priorities. When we listen to ourselves first, we not only give permission for others to do the same, we also teach people how to respect and care for themselves. Creating healthy limits and boundaries fosters an environment of respect, guiding team members on workplace conduct while also showing respect for them. This, in turn, produces a ripple effect.
Ask yourself...
Leadership is about finding the courage to say no as much as it is about saying yes. What could you say “no” to? What might you turn away from in order to turn toward relief, respect, structure, and a feeling of empowerment?
